Rodents
Rodents are found in warm conditions, where there is food and safety. They are usually in the first tank (3 months) or the second (6 months). In the third, there isn’t much left to eat.
Frequent movement scares them away; rodent screens and plugging holes also help. Non-lethal traps can also be used to capture them.
Gastropods
Slugs and snails are found in the first tank, eating fresh greens.
Woodlice
Avid nitrogen eaters (greens), they are found in the first tank. If there are too many, this is a bioindicator to add more woodchips.
Maggots and Flies
Again, in the first tank (the most vibrant). They can sometimes be present in large numbers. If there are too many, this is a bioindicator to add more woodchips.
Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs can hide in fresh compost heaps where they eat slugs, earthworms, or small insects. They are also sometimes found in woodchips or a pile of leaves, especially during the dormant period (starting in autumn).
Earthworms
They are found in the last pile (9 months), sometimes at 6 months. Most often at 3 or 6 months, the worms seen at 3, 6, or 9 months that are red are most often dung worms (Eisenia fetida). Earthworms have a kind of natural „neck warmer,“ unlike dung worms.
