To define a journey (for volunteers, collaborators, funders…) enables to know the steps of the journey, in which numerous tools are used in a diversity of circumstances. Once the tools are known , it is possible to create, modify or adapt them for a specific situation.

Components

Let’s take an example with a volunteer’s journey.

Steps of the journey

We define the steps in an order, for example :

• the discovery of the association ;
• contact ;
• the participation to events ;
• the participation in management ;
• departure…

Steps’ circumstances

For example, for the “discovery of the association” step, we could have :

• the city hall’s directory ;
• an event ;
• the website ;
• media ;
• …

Circumstances’ tools

For example, for the “events” type, we could have :

• an introducing video ;
• arguments ;
• a flyer ;
• a contact card ;
• a QR code ;
• posters ;
• games ;
• …

Define a journey with more people

Defining a journey with other people is more productive. Here is an approach to be the most productive possible.

1. We define the type of journey (volunteers ? collaborators ?)
2. Each on our own, we search for the “steps” (from discovery to departure) without talking so no one is influenced and to not restrict the visions and reflections of others. (5 minutes)
3. We pool our ideas, gather and put in order the groups that we then name. (15 minutes)
4. We look to see if the ideas proposed inspire new ideas to others. (5 minutes)
5. We add to the pooling the new ideas. (5 minutes)
6. We look to evaluate individually the “circumstances” for every group without talking not to influence the other groups and narrow down their views and thoughts. (5 minutes)
7. We proceed to another pooling, and we place “the typologies” in the steps. (15 minutes)
8. We look to see if the ideas proposed inspire new ideas to the people. (5 minutes) 
9. We look to evaluate individually the “tools” for every typology without talking not to influence the other groups and narrow down their views and thoughts. (5 minutes)
10. We proceed to another pooling, and we place “the tools” in the steps. (15 minutes)
11. We look to see if the ideas proposed inspire new ideas to the people. (5 minutes)

 In a concrete case, we researched on notepaper (A4 draft paper cut in eight), then reported the steps on the papers (step icon), on the sheets “typologies/tools” (list and tools icons). We put the sheet “typologies/tools” next to the steps.
